December in Hong Kong is usually about lights, markets and year-end plans – but this year, the Tai Po fire at Wang Fuk Court has shifted the city’s focus to something far more urgent: loss, grief and how we show up for one another. In the days since, we’ve seen an outpouring of care, from neighbours carrying supplies into shelters to small businesses rerouting their profits to frontline charities.
Alongside direct donations, many restaurants, bakeries, shops, creatives and telecoms providers are finding their own ways to contribute – turning meals, data plans, ticketed events and even music releases into tangible support for those affected by the Tai Po fire. Below, we’ve rounded up some of the initiatives taking place now to spotlight who is stepping up – and how you can support their efforts.

SmarTone – Keeping Tai Po families connected
Whether you’re trying to reach family, speak to insurers or simply stay updated, staying connected after a disaster is everything – and SmarTone is stepping in to help. kemt – Intimate track for a city in mourning
Simply pressing play can be an act of solidarity. Lo-fi house and deep-groove artist kemt had just celebrated receiving his Hong Kong permanent residency when he watched the Wang Fuk Court fire unfold outside his home in Tai Po – a day that was meant to mark belonging turning into one of shock and grief. In response, he’s releasing an intimate new track and donating 100% of the proceeds to charities supporting those affected. Having seen both the devastation and the way Hongkongers showed up overnight with food, water and supplies, he’s using his music to give back, with regular updates planned on how much is raised and where it’s going.
